Christchurch City Chorus, an award-winning Sweet Adelines International chorus, is seeking a visionary and inspiring Music Director to lead us into our next chapter. 

Who We Are

We are a vibrant, high-achieving women’s chorus dedicated to four-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style. Under the extraordinary leadership of our retiring Master Director 700, Virginia  Humphrey-Taylor, who has guided us for 40 years, Christchurch City Chorus  has become a powerhouse in barbershop singing. Together we have: 

•  Won every New Zealand regional championship we have entered since 1990 
•  Reached the Top 10 at Sweet Adelines International five times since 2007 
•  Won the Most Entertaining Award in Las Vegas in 2016 
•  Most recently, achieved 5th place at Sweet Adelines International in 2024

Virginia’s vision and dedication built a chorus with a champion mindset, and now we are excited to welcome a new leader to continue this legacy of excellence. 

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Music Director who will: 

• Provide inspired musical and artistic leadership 
• Guide vocal and performance growth 
• Inspire, challenge, and motivate singers 
• Lead us in regional and international competitions 
• Collaborate with our Music and Management Teams 
• Foster a supportive, inspiring, and joyful chorus community 

What You Bring 

• Proven musical ability and leadership potential, with experience as a director, vocal coach, or equivalent musical role
• Strong vocal skills and musical knowledge 
• Excellent teaching, conducting, and communication skills 
• The ability to inspire, teach and lead singers of all levels 
• A passion for developing musical artistry and performance excellence
